AI-Built Apps

Lovable vs Base44 vs Bolt vs Replit: Which AI App Builder Should You Use?

All four can turn a description into a working app. They differ in who they're built for, how much of the stack you control, and how easily you can take your code elsewhere when the app grows.

We build with these tools and take over projects started in them, so we see where each one shines and where projects get stuck. This guide skips the hype and focuses on the questions that matter once you're past the first demo: who it's for, what you own, and what happens when you need more.

One caveat up front: these products change month to month. Features below reflect how the tools work as of October 2026. Check each platform's current plans before you commit, especially for pricing and code export.

The short answer

  • Lovable if you want a polished web app or SaaS MVP fast and want real code you can keep in GitHub.
  • Base44 if you want an internal tool or simple app with database, login and hosting handled for you, and minimal setup.
  • Bolt if you, or someone on your team, is technical and wants to choose the framework and see the code as it's built.
  • Replit if the app is backend-heavy, needs a language other than JavaScript, or you want a full development environment with an AI agent inside it.

Lovable

Lovable turns a chat conversation into a React and TypeScript web app with a clean, modern interface. For data and login it connects to Supabase or its own built-in cloud back end, and it can sync your code to a GitHub repository you own. That last point matters: when you outgrow prompting, a developer can pick up the same code instead of starting over.

Strong at: good-looking UIs, SaaS-style apps with accounts and dashboards, quick iterations. Watch out for: database security rules (see our Lovable security checklist), complex business logic, and prompts that start breaking features that used to work as the app grows.

Base44

Base44, now part of Wix, is the most all-in-one of the four: database, user login and hosting come built in, so there are no outside accounts to connect. That makes it very fast for internal tools, simple customer portals and early products, especially for non-technical founders.

Strong at: getting something usable live with almost no setup. Watch out for: how tied your app is to the platform. Before you build anything important, check what you can export (code, data) on your plan, and how you'd move if you needed custom logic or integrations the platform doesn't support.

Bolt

Bolt (bolt.new, from StackBlitz) runs a full development environment inside your browser, so you watch the files being written and can edit them yourself. You can pick from popular JavaScript frameworks, connect a back end such as Supabase, deploy, and download the project or push it to GitHub.

Strong at: flexibility and transparency for people comfortable reading code. Watch out for: large projects using up AI credits quickly, and needing to assemble and secure the back end yourself.

Replit

Replit is a cloud development environment with an AI agent that can plan and build an app for you. Unlike the others it isn't limited to JavaScript web apps: it handles Python and other languages, APIs, background jobs and scripts, with a built-in database and deployments.

Strong at: backend-heavy apps, data processing, prototypes that need real server code. Watch out for: it's closer to a developer tool, so non-technical users may find it less guided, and running apps and agent usage both cost money as you scale.

When to bring in a developer

AI builders are a great way to start, and often good enough to launch. Bring in an engineer when any of these become true:

  • Real users and personal or payment data are about to arrive, and nobody has reviewed security.
  • New prompts keep breaking features that used to work.
  • You need integrations, payments or business rules the tool keeps getting wrong.
  • Running costs, performance or platform limits start to hurt.
  • Investors, enterprise customers or app stores ask questions about your code and data.

That's not the end of the AI builder. Often the best path is to keep using it for quick UI changes while a developer handles the parts that need engineering. We do exactly that for clients on all four platforms: see our Lovable & Base44 development and no-code & vibe coding services.

FAQ

Common Questions

Lovable suits polished web apps and SaaS MVPs where you want real code in your own GitHub repository. Base44 suits internal tools and simple apps where you want database, login and hosting handled for you with minimal setup. Choose based on how much control and code ownership you need later.

Lovable syncs your code to GitHub, Bolt lets you download the project or push it to GitHub, and Replit keeps the full project in your workspace with Git. For Base44, export options depend on your plan, so check them before you build anything important.

Base44 and Lovable need the least technical knowledge. Base44 handles the back end for you, while Lovable gives you more polished interfaces and code you can hand to a developer later.

Yes. Apps from Lovable, Bolt and Replit come with code a developer can work on directly, and many Base44 apps can be extended or rebuilt in stages. We review the app first and tell you whether to keep building on it or move key parts to custom code.

They can be, but security is the most common gap we find, especially database access rules and exposed API keys. Run through a security checklist before real users and data arrive.
