What Top Rated means on Upwork
Top Rated is a badge Upwork gives freelancers with a strong record on the platform: consistently good client feedback, a high Job Success Score and a history of completed work. It tells you the person has delivered for real clients and kept them happy. Upwork sets and updates the exact criteria, so check its help pages for the current rules.
What it doesn't tell you: whether the developer has built an app like yours, whether they work alone or with a team, or how they'll handle your code and accounts. That's what the rest of this checklist is for.
How to check an Upwork developer's profile
- Read the reviews, not just the stars. Look for projects similar to yours and comments about communication and deadlines.
- Look at the portfolio. Ask for apps you can install from the App Store or Google Play, or websites you can open.
- Check the stack. Swift and Kotlin for native apps, Flutter or React Native for both platforms from one codebase, and React, Next.js and Node.js for web.
- Ask how they work. Milestones, demos, how often you'll get updates, and time-zone overlap with you.
- Start with a small paid milestone, such as a design or a first feature, before committing to the whole build.
