6 Months Industrial Training in Mohali: How to Choose the Right Company.
Your six-month industrial training is the closest thing to a first job most students get. Done well, you finish with a real project and skills employers ask about. Done badly, you finish with a certificate and little else. Here's how to tell the difference before you pay.
Most B.Tech, BCA and MCA students in Punjab need six months of industrial training in their final year, and Mohali, Chandigarh and Panchkula have many places offering it. Brochures look similar, so the useful questions are the ones a brochure doesn't answer. Visit in person before you enrol, and ask these.
1. Is it a working software company?
Training at a company that builds software for real clients is different from a classroom that only teaches. Ask what the company builds, and whether you can see apps or websites it has shipped. A team that ships real products works with the tools, code reviews and deadlines you'll meet in a job.
2. Will you build a real project of your own?
The most valuable thing you can leave with is a complete project you built and can explain in an interview: what it does, how it's structured and what you'd improve. Ask whether you'll build your own project from start to finish, or only follow along with demos. Ask to see projects past trainees built.
3. Who teaches you, and how often?
- Are the mentors developers who work on client projects?
- How many students does each mentor look after?
- Will a mentor review your code, or only answer questions?
- Is it in person, online, or recorded videos? (In-person mentoring is much easier to learn from.)
4. Is the technology current?
Ask exactly what you'll learn. For mobile apps, current choices include Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android, and Flutter or React Native for both. For web, React and TypeScript are widely used. Git and GitHub should be part of every track, because every team uses them. If you're unsure which to pick, read Flutter vs React Native.
5. The certificate and your college's requirements
Check that the industrial training certificate meets your college's requirements before you enrol: the duration, the format and any documents your college needs. A good training provider will ask for your college's format and help you with it.
6. Fees, timings and what's included
- Ask for the full fee in writing, including anything extra.
- Check batch timings fit your college schedule.
- Ask what support you get with your resume, GitHub profile and interview preparation.
Red flags
- A "100% placement guarantee". No training provider can promise you a job; ask what support they actually give instead.
- No real projects or past student work to show you.
- Mostly recorded videos, with little time with a mentor.
- Pressure to pay today before you've visited.
